Front Matter

Preface

The book in your hands presents a systematic process for achieving excellence step by step, with particular emphasis on building a strong foundation and fostering human development to realize organizational goals.

The foundation for the model presented here was laid in 1995 when, at BHEL Bhopal, we decided to implement the TQM philosophy by adopting the CII-EXIM Award Model, based on the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) guidelines.

My assessment of organizations based on this model—as an internal assessor for nearly all BHEL plants and many public sector enterprises over eleven years—greatly helped me develop the framework presented here.

It was my cherished dream to use these learnings to provide a Model of Excellence useful not only for industrial enterprises but also for individuals, students, and small business establishments.

Though I have been applying the approach outlined in this model throughout my career, and used it to bring about the turnaround at BPCL, it was tested and refined through presentations at various forums including SCOPE, IIM Calcutta, and multiple organizations and institutes.
